An Old Story 013

"Hey! Wait for me!" the girl was running towards her.

"Uh o." Erin said to herself.

Erin was back at school after 2 weeks of holiday. She was once again back in uniforms along with her blue schoolbag. She was just going to her classroom when she heard the girl. She had forgot to meet Jayme at the bus stop.

"I nearly got caught by the prefect! Where did you go?" Jayme nagged at her while panting.

"Oops. I'm so sorry Jayme. I totally forgot about meeting you. But we'll going to be late for class." Erin pulled Jayme's wrist and they headed to their class.

As soon as they sat down in their seats, Miss Kayla walked in.

"Where's Miss Leila?" Erin whispered while Miss Kayla was teaching Mike how to sketch using a traditional 2B pencil instead of his favorite mechanical pencil.

"How would I know." Jayme said while drawing a portrait of her favorite character from Lizzie McGuire.

"She's never coming back." Charlie interrupts sarcastically.

"Why? Please tell me, the one and only gossip girl." Erin put on an innocent smile.

Charlie came closer to Erin and said in a low tone.

"She's a murderer."

"Impossible. Where did you even get that?" Erin and Jayme said with confidence. Both of them knew Miss Leila. They would go to her house every fortnight to bake cookies and pies.

"It's true! I saw her with bloody red hands when the police came and pushed her into the police car. Who would knew Miss Leila is such an evil person." Charlie said and walked away when she saw the two girls with stares of wanting to beat her up.

"Girls, can I see your drawing?" Miss Kayla was standing in front of them.

"I drew a pikachu." Erin was slightly embarrassed with her pikachu when she saw Jayme's beautiful portrait.

"It's quite good, Erin. How about you, Jayme?" Miss Kayla smiled.

"Here" Jayme handed her drawing to the teacher. "Miss Kayla?"

"Yes?"

"I was wondering, where's Miss Leila?" Both Jayme and Erin were eager to know where is she.

"I'm not sure, but she said she won't be back for quite awhile." Miss Kayla said while thinking what was Miss Leila, her best friend up to.

Suddenly, the speakers along the corridors rang.

"Good morning my pals! It's eleven o'clock and recess time. I hope you are hungry, cause the canteen's menu includes Mexican tacos and burritos. To our teachers, please don't give us too much schoolwork since it's just the first day of school."

It was Ricky's voice. He was the DJ for this week.

The school has a special radio DJ room for a program to let students report what is happening in the school. Each week, a student will be the DJ and report ongoing activities for the week, notices and school announcements. They are allowed to discuss anything they want as long as it's educational. The school does let loose in the morning, where the latest songs will be broadcasted every morning for 2 to 3 hours.

"Well class, I hope you finish your drawing and hand them in by Wednesday. Thank you." Miss Kayla said as the students exited the class for recess.

An Old Story 012

He bought a mini pizza from the canteen. He was looking for an empty space. Further away from where he stood, he saw a girl sitting alone at a table. He then walked over to her.

"Taeyeon." He greeted the girl with a bright smile.

"Hi." She responded. She looked gloomy so he wondered what happened.

"Hey, what's up?" He asked her quietly.

"I really don't feel like talking about it." She said and stood up.

"Come on, we'll go somewhere less noisy." He said and grabbed her wrist.

He took her to the field. They laid down and looked up into the sky.

"How are you going to eat like that?" She asked him.

He then started eating the pizza while laying down.

"You're choice." She laid comfortably and gazed at the big blue sky.

"Hey, what's going on? You make me worry." He asked while munching his food.

"Giljong." She called out his name.

"Hmm?"

She doesn't know how to tell him. To her, he was a very caring big brother. He still hasn't know because he's been busy with his projects. Or else, he would have seen the news and knew about it.

Tears came out of her eyes.

"Taeyeon, come here." He said as he hugged her to comfort her.

"Oppa, I'm getting married."She sobbed in his arms.

An Old Story 011

"You're soul mate? How old were you again?" Jaegyu couldn't believe what Dongjoo was telling him.

Dongjoo was lively when he's working or going out with his friends. Everyone in the industry admired him for his dedication in his work and the way he treats everyone around him with respect.

But Jaegyu had seen another side of him. When both of them were drinking at the bar, Dongjoo was quiet, he never talks. Even if he did, it wasn't anything about himself. Now, at a coffee shop in a foreign country, he told of his hidden past.

Dongjoo smiled at his friend. He knew people thought that it's just puppy love or kids thinking too much. But deep down, even at that age, his heart, mind and soul knew that the feelings are true. She was the only one for him.

"It was perfect. For a few months. Then..." Dongjoo stopped.

"This is getting boring." Dongjoo said.

"I gotta rush to the toilet." Jaegyu said as he left.

"Caffeine" Dongjoo laughed.

Dongjoo looked to the fountain just opposite of the coffee shop. Around the fountain were beautiful red and white roses.

Reminiscing the memories with her was something he never did until today.

Now, looking at the scene in front of him,

he whispered...

"Jangmi."

An Old Story 010

"Your ex?" Jaegyu asked another question.

"Yes." Dongjoo answered with a deep sigh.

"According to the crazy paparazzi, you have never went out with any girl, never had a first love, never dated. They even gave up on watching you after 4 years of stalking... You never publicize anything about your love life. In fact, I think you never told anyone, including me. Would you mind explaining how an ex appears suddenly?" Jaegyu said with a what-the-heck look.

"Long story short, it's painful." Dongjoo's tone was depressed.

"Come on, let it out." Jaegyu persuaded him.

"Here goes." He took a deep breathe. Then, slowly, he reminisced about his hidden past.

"She's my first love. We studied in the same middle school. After being friends for awhile, we started dating. No one knew, our friends, my parents. We met nearly everyday at different places, the school library, the park, at theme parks, even in small candy shops. For every date we had, we took a picture. As both of us started to get busy with our studies, we went out less, but our feelings for each other somehow became stronger.

When we finished our studies in high school, I brought her to Bora Bora. There, I proposed to her and she accepted. We got married there, said our vows while the sun sets in the evening. The priest was there too."

"Out of curiosity, your first night was at 18?!" Jaegyu cuts in all of a sudden.

"There was no 'first night', as you call it." Dongjoo said with a serious face.

"Okay. Please continue." Jaegyu said and prepared to listen to every word that comes out of Dongjoo's mouth.

"We never told anyone about it when we came home. No one suspected anything. In my family, we're suppose to move out of the house when we reach 18, no matter if your working or studying. I got a small apartment with the money I saved from acting part time in high school. Both of us lived happily together. We kept on living our lives as usual, both of us continued studying, but at different places. It didn't matter. Being with her, my wife, is the best moment of my life. I was living with my soul mate."

An Old Story 009

He had been walking for more than an hour until he saw the coffee shop. He didn't mind. Along the way, he looked and admired the scenery. There wasn't any skyscrapers, luxurious cars or people in suits and gowns. He took deep breathes of the fresh sweet, countryside air. This is what he came for, to relax himself, for the first time.

He saw a familiar face at one of the tables and waved to him.

"Jaegyu!"

"Yah! What took you so long! Where did you wander off to? It took you nearly 2 hours!" Jaegyu was furiously shouting at him without bothering people staring at him.

Dongjoo chuckled and bowed 90 degree.

"Mianhae." He said with a guilty tone.

Jaegyu noticed people looking at them and he sat down abruptly. He drank his coffee in one gulp.

Dongjoo then sat down and ordered lunch for both of them.

Dongjoo and Jaegyu have been best friends for 5 years. But due to their work, they only communicate through the phone or the net. They meet with their friends at the bar once in a few weeks or months for some drinks. Just a few weeks ago, they planned this vacation because Jaegyu's contract has ended while coincidentally Dongjoo just finished a 35 episode drama. Both of them had nothing on their schedule and they decided to travel after visiting their own families.

"Hey, what's bothering you?" Jaegyu asked while taking a big scoop of rice.

"I met my ex yesterday." Dongjoo answered while playing with his food like a child.

Upon hearing that, Jaegyu nearly choked. He took Dongjoo's glass of water and drink one third of it.

"Did you say ex? You used to have a wife?" Jaegyu asked intently as he finished his plate of curry rice.

An Old Story 008: Who's Dongjoo?

"Mom?" Erin called out cautiously.

"Hmm?" She turned around.

"What are you thinking?" Erin asked while she was washing the plates.

"Nothing. I'm going to go out to buy some things. Is there anything you want?" She asked while taking her car keys.

"No, mom." Erin replied as her mother waved goodbye.

"She's not herself today. I wonder if she's too tired these few days." Erin talked to herself as she wiped the plates and arranged them nicely on the rack.

After that she went on the internet. She played some games and chatted with her friend, Delia who migrated to Canada a year ago. When Delia went offline, she had nothing to do.

She thought of Dongjoo. She knew he looks very familiar. Feeling bored, she typed "Dongjoo" in the search engine, expecting to find nothing. Little did she knew, pictures came out and it was the same Dongjoo, but he was wearing a tuxedo, standing on a red carpet. There were some where he was posing with a golden trophy.

"He's a famous person?" Erin gasped. As a curious child, she clicked into a website to read about what seemed to be his profile.

"...... Kang Dongjoo...... son of Kang Junghwan and Min Eunjung... graduated in Korea National University of Arts in Acting... started... small roles in drama ... at the age of 15... began career as an actor at the age of 18... won several awards... successful career... switched to directing... scriptwriter... collaborated... many works... producer... first movie in progress... personal life... never publicized... recently... announced his marriage... "

"Now I know why he's so familiar. He was on the news a week ago," she paused.

"Erin, I'm home!" Her mom called out from outside. Erin shut off her computer and helped her mother with the groceries.

"Are you busy with anything?" Seohyun asked Erin.

Erin shook her head and peeked inside the shopping bags. She saw the things inside.

"I'm making cookies. Wanna join in?" She asked, but she knew the answer already.

Without a word, Erin dashed to the cupboards and get the utensils needed.

"This is to reward you for helping me in the restaurant. These past few days were really hectic." Seohyun said while poking Erin's cheek with her flour-covered finger.

"Hey!" Erin drew a smiley face on her mother's arm using the flour.

"Mom, where's the chips? Did you get them?" Erin's eyes were scanning the table for the container filled with tiny black and white chocolate chips.

"Sweetie, don't rush. You haven't even mix this." She pointed to the mixing bowl.

"Alright. But where is it?" Erin pouted, worried that she might not be able to make chocolate chip cookies.

"I'll go get it." Seohyun giggled.

"You hide it!" Erin moaned while her hands are busy making the dough into small round shapes.

An Old Story 007: More Than A Cup Of Coffee

"What am I going to do now?" Jaegyu asked himself.

He has been sitting at the table for half an hour and has already finished 2 cups of coffee. To add to it, he also finished reading the book he brought from home.

He looked around. Some people were using the internet while others were relaxing or having conversations. The atmosphere was very peaceful.

"Annyeonghaseyo. Sorry to bother, but is this seat taken?"

Jaegyu understood what the voice was saying and felt too happy. He hadn't talked to anyone since yesterday. Out of nowhere, he hears his language in this foreign country.

He turned to see a girl holding her netbook. He shook his head and as gracefully as the swan, she sat down.

"I'm Vivian." Her voice was mesmerizing.

"Nice to meet you Vivian. I'm Jaegyu." He looks at her. She seems to be a local university student but she has this mysterious aura.

"Yah! Stop looking at her!" Jaegyu was thinking to himself. She looks so beautiful thou.

"Just wondering, where did you learn Korean?" Jaegyu wondered how did she spoke it so fluently.

"I'm taking classes. Did I say something wrong?" Vivian sounded a bit worried.

"No. You are very good at the language." He said it immediately.

She called the waiter.

"I'd like a cup of green tea, please." The waiter nodded and left.

"If only I could speak a little English." Jaegyu mumbled to himself after that.

"I could teach you a bit. And you could teach me Korean too." Vivian said to him as she looked him in the eyes.

She has such hypnotizing eyes. Jaegyu smiled and agreed.

They talked about the different cultures around the world. Vivian's green tea was served and Jaegyu offered to pay for it.

"Thank you." Vivian said shyly.

"I should be the one to say thank you. We had a nice conversation. I haven't been talking to anyone for a whole day because I got lost. I couldn't speak the local language too."

Suddenly, Vivian's phone rang. She answered it. Jaegyu couldn't understand a word she said because she was talking very fast.

After awhile, she finished her phone conversation and looked at her watch.

"I'm sorry, I have to go for a class." She stood up and thanked him again for the tea.

"Umm...Could you give me your number? So I can contact you for my English classes?"

"Sure." She smiled and took out her phone. They exchanged their numbers.

She left in a rush. Jaegyu looked as she left, her long silky hair swiftly flowing in the wind.

An Old Story 006: "I Also Got Lost"

The next morning, Dongjoo decided to go to the Jasmine Restaurant. When he reached there, there was nobody. He read the sign:

Open from 7.00am to 10.00pm
Closed on Tuesdays.

With a sigh, he turned around looking at the street in front of him.

"You are my life; no matter how long; I will wait for that day; for us to be together again"

His phone rang.

"Yeoboseyo?"

"Dongjoo? Where are you? Do you know that I've been calling you from yesterday until now! I can't speak English and I don't know where I am since you burnt the map!" The voice was filled with rage.

"Hey, Jaegyu, calm down will you? I also got lost."

"Good for you." He said from the other end.

Dongjoo was quiet for awhile.

"Do you still remember how to go to the place we had lunch yesterday?"

"Yeah?" Jaegyu said, waiting for him to continue.

"I'll meet you there in 1 hour."

"What? An hour? I can reach there by 10 minutes! How far did you wander off?" Jaegyu said half afraid. He couldn't speak English, with the exception of a few random words like "hello", "coffee", "candy", "zoo" and "good".

"Order a drink or something. Put it on my tab." Dongjoo said cheerfully.

"Yeah yeah. Meet you later."

The phone conversation ended.

Dongjoo then went to the shop beside the restaurant. It was a bookshop. He browsed through the shop and found a map. He took it and went to the counter. The cashier was a teenager. He took quite sometime to give Dongjoo his change because he was being careful and double checking the amount.

Dongjoo then took his own time to walk to the place where he's meeting Jaegyu.

An Old Story 005: Car

After Dongjoo left the car...

"Mom, whose Dongjoo?" Erin ask her mom. She suddenly remembered that mom had not told her how did she know Dongjoo.

"Let's just say, long story short, he's my ex husband."She said it quick while focusing on the road.

"Whaa....? Mom, can you repeat?" Erin yawned.

"Dongjoo's my ex husband."

"What?!?!" Erin practically shouted in her mom's ear.

"How could...Wait...What? You're marr...how?...When?" Erin was shocked and gazillion questions were popping inside her head.

She laughed at Erin's reaction. It was expected. Erin has been living with her for 8 years now. She adopted Erin who was 2 years old. She took great care of Erin and Erin loved her as thou she was her real mother.

"Mom..." Erin called out in a deep tone.

"No! You're going to interrogate me! I'm innocent!" She shout out.

"Not yet." Erin said while laughing.

"Why is that?" She asked.

"Cause I left my notebook and pen at home."

They continued their role-play conversation until they reached home.

An Old Story 004: Nite Nite

They arrived at the Red Rose Hotel.

"Hey."

"Hmm?" He turned to her.

"Take care."

Erin woke up from her sleep at this time.

"Dongjoo, can you give me your phone number?" she said in a sleepy tone while taking out her cell phone.

"What do you want with it?" He asked.

"Can't I?" He laughed at her cuteness and told her his number.

Dongjoo then took his backpack and said bye.

@@@@@ @@@@@

The hotel building is made up of a few shop houses. It was modified with the addition of hallways and small rooms. There were 5 rooms left and Dongjoo checked into one of them.

"Room 5...room 5...room 5...room 5" Dongjoo kept repeating to himself in the hallway until he reached room 5. He went in.

There was a single bed, a TV set, a cabinet, a phone and a bathroom, everything fitted perfectly in the room.

Dongjoo took a bath and laid on the bed.

"I missed you, Jangmi..."

An Old Story 003: After Dinner

"Why are you smiling like that?"

He was looking at her. He was spacing out into the unknown universe.

"Dongjoo!"

He still didn't answer.

"Dongjoo!!"

"Hmm? Don't need to shout, I can hear." He said softly, still looking at her as though she never shouted in his ear.

"Alen! 3 orange juice, 2 apple juice and 3 kiwi juice." Erin told Alen the orders.

"I have to help at the counter and kitchen. Where are you staying? I'll drive you there later." She said as she stood up to tidy the table.

"Erin told me there's this hotel called...what's the name...Red Rose?"

She took his cup but was stopped. He held her wrist.

"Can I have another cup?" he looked up into her eyes. They were as beautiful as it was then.

She made a face and shook her head. She took the cups away and walked into the kitchen.

He looked at her, just like he used to.

"Hey! Why are you staring at my mom like that?" Erin was standing beside him. She also handed him a bowl of noodles.

"What? What was I staring at?" Dongjoo asked innocently.

"Tell me the truth!"

"Erin, don't be rude to people. Come in here and help me a bit, pleaseee" It was already 9 but there were still customers coming in.

Pouting, Erin went to the kitchen.

"Such a cute girl" He ate the bowl of noodles and finished it fast.

He stood up and walk around the restaurant. It was basically white, with small, bright colored objects hung on the walls or put on the shelves. These include teacups, photos, saucers and even books. There was a big board on the wall that listed what the restaurant serves.

While Erin and her mom were busy, Dongjoo had a long conversation with one of the restaurant's regular customer.

The restaurant was nearly empty by 10.30pm. Erin came out of the kitchen when the customers left.

"Finally!" She exclaimed and yawned.

"Tired?" Dongjoo asked.

"Of course not. It's really cool to work in the restaurant. Everyone in school is jealous of me."

"Why is that?" Dongjoo asked the girl who is full of enthusiasm.

"Cause they don't get to work until they're 16" she said and went to tidy the books on the shelves.

"Mom told you to wait for awhile. She'll be out in 15 minutes." Erin said while rubbing her eyes.

@@@@@ @@@@@

After awhile, she came out of the kitchen, took her green sling bag and turned off all the lights. Dongjoo was outside the shop, lighting a smoke.

"You said the Red Rose Hotel?" she asked while locking up the door.

"Yes." He immediately threw his cigarette into a bin.

"Get in." she said as she heads for the driver's seat, Erin in the backseat.

An Old Story 002: A Conversation

Mom sat down at his table as I went to the kitchen. I couldn't hear what they are doing.

How did mom know that guy? But then, she was from Korea. Now that I think of it, he looks really familiar.

Oops! I took the cocoa powder! Aish, I drifted away again.

"Looks like someone isn't paying any attention!"

I turned to my right to see Alen being scolded by the cook, Fakri. I guess he burnt the egg again.

I served the coffee to mom and Dongjoo. I think I heard him saying becoming a producer?

"Erin, could you come here and teach him how to cook an egg?"

"Coming." Looks like Fakri still has a few dishes to prepare while Alen was panicking with the salt.

@@@@@ @@@@@

"Long time no see. So...how are you?" Dongjoo said with a weak smile.

"I'm good. I've open my own restaurant. You? Is it tough in the industry?" She asked with a worry tone.

"I'm still doing okay. I get to pay my bills on time. I'm starting to aim for producer."

"That's good, I guess" She was very quiet.

"Seohyun, I hope you don't mind me asking, Erin..." She shook her head and sipped her coffee.

"Erin's my adopted daughter. I saw the news, your getting married huh? Congratulations! I'm happy for you.

"To tell you the truth, I don't even have a girlfriend. The beautiful girl you saw was an arrangement by my parents. They said I was too immersed in my career and should get married. Omma dragged me to blind dates. I was very busy and told them to choose the girl they like. But I never knew they were going to arrange a marriage. Mianhae, I talked too much."

She laughed. "I guess you feel lighter now that you've talked about it."

He smiled brightly while looking at her.

An Old Story 001: The Meeting

He was wearing casual clothes. Comparing him to the other guys in suits rushing about, he's really good-looking. I guess he's a tourist.

I couldn't stop looking at him.

"Erin! Snap out of it!" I slapped myself before I started daydreaming.

But does he know that he's been walking in circles? Should I offer to help? But mom said I'm such a busybody and I have to finish the food delivering too.

"Umm...hello. Could you help me a bit?" It was a deep voice. There was a very strong accent too. I looked up...it's him! Whoa...he's tall too.

"I believe I'm lost."

"Umm...where do you want to go?" I asked as I took a step back, suddenly remembering about the recent cases of foreigners kidnapping girls. You can never be too sure, right?

"Well, I don't quite know. Is there any place that I can stay? Since it's getting late."

He seemed harmless, maybe he's really lost.

"There's a hotel just a street away. I think it's called Red Rose Hotel."

"Thanks." He then walked away.

Now, for the delivery. Mrs Kwan, 7th Street...

"Sorry to bother."

"Hmm?" It was him again. Wasn't he going to the hotel?

"Where can I try some good food? Please? I'll treat you for troubling you." Is he giving puppy eyes?!

"You can come to my mom's place. It's just around the corner. I have to do some delivery, bye" It's getting late, I hope Mrs Kwan won't be angry. Her house was 2 blocks away. I ran as fast as I could but I was 5 minutes late. She paid me only after her 10-minutes-lecture. I looked at my watch. It was 7.15pm. I looked up, the moon was out early. There was a figure in front of me too. Him again....he's getting creepy...

"Don't you have anything else to do?" I asked him as my eyes were searching for an escape route, just in case.

"I have nothing to do. I didn't get to say thank you. Anyway, I'll treat you. Lead the way, miss... What's your name?"

"Erin. You?" Well, starting a conversation wasn't bad since it's a long walk.

"Miss Erin, I'm Dongjoo. Just wondering, is there curry around here?"

What? Why then sudden question about curry?

"Curry? Yeah, there is. Where are you from?"

"I'm from Korea."

"That's a coincidence. My mom's from Korea too. But she doesn't have an accent like yours. Where did you learn English?"

"I went to America for a few years."

"I think you need to practice more." Oops...my sarcastic mouth...

He chuckled.

We walked for about 15 minutes until we reached Jasmine Restaurant. My mom single-handedly started this restaurant and she was really proud of it.

"Mom! I'm home!"

"Sweetie, why are you late? Just wait awhile, I'll be out in a minute."

I took the menu and passed it to Dongjoo. I guess mom's really busy in the kitchen.

"Sweetie, what took you so long? You made me worry."

"Mom, this guy here got lost. He felt hungry and I brought him here. He's from Korea too!"

"Who is it?" She came out of the kitchen holding an empty tray.

"Dongjoo?!" She looked really surprised.

"Yeobo?" Dongjoo murmured.

"Mom, you know him? Why is he calling you yeobo?" I looked at her but she seemed...

"Erin, why don't you go get some coffee for us. Thanks."

"Okay..." I replied and went to the kitchen.
